Why?<\/h2>\n
Because compassion, kindness, and empathy play a central role in medicine. Or at least, they should – as this is not always demonstrated by practitioners. That they do play this central role is supported by empirical evidence. For example, patients who perceive empathy in their doctors have better outcomes and chances of recovery. Just as acts of kindness on behalf of the physician can help to diffuse grief and angst with difficult communication challenges, such as cancer or other life-changing diagnoses. A kind and supportive relationship between doctor and patient can also help to reduce stress, spur improved immune functioning, and contribute to the improvement of mental health.<\/p>\n
There are additional benefits to an empathetic approach to medicine. In an ever-increasingly bureaucratic and sanitized healthcare system, a conscious deployment of empathy can act as a counterweight to the impersonality of the system and consequent insecurity that patients may feel. I also believe my own practice of medicine is enriched by consciously withstanding this impersonality and encouraging the patient to feel like the human being they are. I am also genuinely curious as to a patient\u2019s personal life and life circumstances as I believe that while these may not necessarily have a causal link to their condition, I do believe that there can be correlations and therefore ancillary things the patient can do to optimize their health. That besides, I am generally simply interested in people, and I genuinely like the people I treat.<\/p>\n
\nThe essence of my work is therefore to combine science and medical expertise with humanism and warmth. I take personal responsibility, have a vested interest in, and go the extra mile to ensure my patients always feel personally comfortable, even when facing difficult news or medical challenges, and to accompany them fully on their journey of healing and back to health.<\/p>\n
General practitioners hold a precise, detailed overview of an array of conditions. As a PCP first and foremost, I would be the first person to see to collect your information and put the pieces of your specific medical puzzle together to arrive at the greater diagnostic picture.<\/p>\n
From there, I either recommend a course of treatment myself or recommend the best specialist in Austria for a specific condition through my extensive and encompassing network of fellow medical professionals garnered over my 25 years of experience. And as a member simultaneously of WIGAM (Viennese Association of Family Physicians) DEGAM (German Association of Family Physicians), and AAFP (American Academy of Family Physicians), I have a Transatlantic network that keeps me constantly updated and on top of all the most recent medical developments and treatment breakthroughs, prior to their becoming mainstream accessible. This is a vital component of my constant and continual care for my patients: combining my own knowledge, my privileged access to information, and my personal care for patients provides a nexus of experience that I always continually learn from.<\/p>\n
